FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

WHO IS INVITED?

Currently-enrolled Challenge II students and Licensed Challenge II Directors from all area Classical Conversations® communities are welcome.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

Please bring a shareable Appetizer or Dessert that is:

  • NUT-FREE
  • Ready to serve (no heating or refrigeration needed)
  • 24-36 small portions (bite-sized is ideal)

Salad forks, plates, cups, and napkins will be provided, along with water and punch. We usually wind up with more desserts than appetizers, so if in doubt, consider bringing something savory.

If your student has a specific food allergy (gluten, dairy, etc.), please bring something he/she can eat.

WHAT IS THE DRESS CODE?

Dress modestly in Regency Costume or Business Attire. Gloves are required for both ladies and gentlemen.

(Students wearing denim, sneakers, athletic wear, or other inappropriate attire will be sent to the scullery to wash dishes.)

English Country Dancing is quite lively, so expect to perspire and prepare accordingly! Ladies will be most comfortable in CLOSED-TOE, FLAT SHOES (such as ballet flats) rather than heels. Ankle-length hems are best. If your hemline is longer, consider sewing in a finger loop of elastic, or bringing a hair tie, to hold up your skirt during the dancing.

WHAT IS THE CRITERIA FOR COSTUME PRIZE WINNERS?

A small cash prize will be awarded to the best dressed Lady and Gentleman. In past years, our costume winners have tended to be those whose attire was the most authentic with lots of attention to details such as shoes, period hairstyle, accessories, etc. Fashions of the English Regency were quite different than the styles of the preceding (Georgian or Rococo) and succeeding (Victorian) eras, so a little online research can be helpful in understanding the aesthetic.

NOTE: Don’t make the costume a source of anxiety! Students in business attire are just as welcome as those in costume.
WHAT IS THE GENTLEMEN’S LOTTERY?

To encourage participation of gentlemen, we offer a cash prize to one randomly-chosen gentleman. The prize will vary based on attendance, but is usually around $150.
